KIM BROWN WINS AUGUST 2010 KNOCKOUT : 7-5
ROB BRITO RUNNER UP – photo attached and note the medal trophies – anything unusual about the trophies?
AUGUST 2010 ROUND ROBIN MINI TOURNAMENT RESULTS
We were able to organise 2 x 8 player events on the 17th August.
In the first one point match tournament ROB BRITO [that name again] won with 8 points and runner-up was new member ELSA COUCOPOULOS with 7 points. Close on their heels were JOHN McLEAN at 6 ½ points and SAM CLIFFORD at 6 points.
In the second one point match tournament JESSICA CLIFFORD won with 8 points and runner-up was EMMANUEL LAVRENTIADIS also with 8 points.
The reason JESSICA was the tournament winner even though both players had the same number of points is that when we undertook a count back, when she played EMMANUEL, she defeated EMMANUEL. Not only did she defeat him but she won a gammon!
In fact JESSICA CLIFFORD won 2 gammons that night.
The Editor apologises to Jessica for publishing the incorrect result.
Well done to you all.
LOOKING FOR A CLASSY BOARD
Check out www.crisloid.com .
New member Kathryn Harvey purchased a lovely, professional looking, leather and cork board over the internet and said her transaction was hassle free.
NEW MEMBER (sort of)
Good to see JACOB HOFFMEYER back in play. Those who remember Jacob know him as a very dangerous player. Welcome back Jacob.
22 Jul 10 - NEW MEMBERS
Welcome to ELSA COUCOPOULOS who joins other recent members Mark Stockhausen and Kathryn Harvey.
MINI TOURNAMENT RESULTS We were able to organise 2 mini tournaments [all 1 point matches without the cube] on Tuesday 20th July.
In the first event NICK BEGAKIS won with 8 ½ points beaten only by new member Elsa Coucopoulos. Runner up was SHANE McNALLY with 7 points. Nick managed two gammons as did Shane.
The second event was won by JOHN O’GRADY with 8 points and was beaten by both Emmanuel Lavrentiadis and Nick Papadopoulos but managed to win both a gammon and backgammon. Runner up was KIM BROWN with 6 ½ points. Kim also managed to win 2 gammons.
Well done Nick, Shane, John and Kim.

2010 July KO - Runner up Emmanuel congratulates Shane(R)
Fresh from his win in Sunday’s ANGIE HAMBOUR TOURNAMENT, SHANE McNALLY stormed his way into the finals and defeated EMMANUEL LAVRENTIADIS 7-5. As the score sheet shows, Shane moved quickly [first game] to a 4-0 lead to 7, significant. Emmanuel pegged him back to level at 5-5 but Shane managed the last game, winning 2 points and the match. On his way to the final, Shane defeated Chris Benham [who won the consolation tournament of Sunday] and John McLean [whom he defeated last Sunday and John therefore claimed 3rd place]. Emmanuel on the other hand knocked out Nick Papadopoulos and Claudie Tromp to reach the finals.
Congratulations SHANE McNALLY.
07 Jul 10 - SHANE McNALLY WINS 2010 ANGIE HAMBOUR TOURNAMENT
Full report and photos here.
16 Jun 10 - ONE POINT TOURNAMENT
We organised one last Tuesday which JOHN McLEAN won with 5 points with both CLAUDIE TROMP and SIEGFRIED POHLENZ each on 4 points. But SIEGFRIED defeated CLAUDIE in their match, SIEGFRIED was runner up. Congratulations JOHN and SIEGFRIED.
2009 CLUB CHAMPION
We have a ‘happy snap’ of CHRIS BENHAM – 2009 CLUB CHAMPION – and ANGELO ALI [runner up] displaying their well deserved cheques [and we have that panda in the background again!].
10 Jun 10 - CHRIS BENHAM – 2009 CLUB CHAMPION
2009 LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
As reported recently, the grand final was to be played between CHRIS BENHAM and ANGELO ALI. As the score sheets show, Angelo never figured in the first 9 point match going down 9-0. In the second match, Angelo managed to keep pace to 3-3 but Chris just moved away winning 9-4. Well done to CHRIS BENHAM, another mighty, unstoppable, effort. And commiserations to Angelo for a great all year effort – next time, maybe? And our photo shows a happy than he should be, Angelo, congratulating Chris at the Hilton.
JUNE 2010 KNOCKOUT TOURNAMENT
As mentioned last edition, a John won that event. Here we have a photo of JOHN O’GRADY [R] accepting JOHN McLEAN’S congratulations with a lifelike Panda in the background. The photo is of course in the Hilton Hotel so the Panda is only lifelike – the real ones are in the Adelaide Zoo – reportedly 2 of only 6 outside of China in the world. Backgammon action is wild but not that wild.
BELLIS FRUIT BARS GIFT BASKET TOURNAMENT
On Tuesday 8th June, Nick Begakis, owner of Bellis Fruit Bars, donated a gift basket of his company’s products as a fundraiser for the club. $5 entry saw players snap up the 8 available spots. The final was between CLAUDIE TROMP and SHANE McNALLY which Claudie won 8-1. Interesting in that Shane entered twice and who should have knocked him out in the first round but – CLAUDIE – in much the same way. Shane was commiserating with anyone that would listen [and we all gave him an ear – you never know when you may need an ear yourself] that he just cannot defeat Claudie no matter what he tries to do! And a nice photo is attached of Claudie with her $5 Bellis Fruit Bars Gift Basket and a happy [for her] Shane next to her – although he did making some threatening gestures to take away her prize just before the sphoto was taken! Well done CLAUDIE TROMP.
05 Jun 10 - JUNE 2010 KNOCKOUT TOURNAMENT
Well, a John was always going to win. The final was between JOHN O’GRADY and JOHN McLEAN. See score sheet attached. John McLean sprinted away to a 2-0 lead which John O’Grady matched, then moved away 3-2 and then with a 4 point game to 7-2.
Congratulation to JOHN O’GRADY – well done.
ASTONISHING LEAGUE WIN
“Astonishing” is how June 2010 Knockout Tournament winner John O’Grady described Rebecca Mules win over reigning State Champion and other titles, Chris Benham, 11-10. See attached score sheet. In the first game, Chris soared to an 8-0 lead making it 10-0 in the next match. If you were Chris at this time, you could be forgiven for thinking it is almost over. But Rebecca was not apparently fazed by the daunting task and won the Crawford Game to be 10-1. And then another single game for Rebecca to 10-2. Chris could still be thinking of victory here. Then a two point game to 10-4 for Rebecca followed by another 2 points then another 4 points so the score stood at 10-10. Remarkable! And the final game with Chris somewhat shocked went to Rebecca culminating a match that was truly “astonishing”. So there is another example of how to play backgammon – never give in!
Well done REBECCA MULES.
1st HALF LEAGUE ENDS 29 JUNE 2010
So hurry up and play those matches left.
26 May 10 - BACKGAMMON BOARD TOURNAMENT
Last Tuesday night 8 players put their $5 down to playoff for a red felt backgammon board, a board surplus to the club’s requirements [see photo]. We have a couple more of these boards which we will organise playoffs for in the future. CLAUDIE TROMP met THEO GEORGIOU in the 7 point final and we are reliably informed [by Theo] that Claudie kept throwing doubles on the very last roll when bearing off to defeat him and get to take the board home [see photo of Claudie with her $5 board trying to keep it out of Theo’s clutches!]. One photo we were not able to capture is the one of Claudie doing some sort of ‘victory dance’ in front of a less than impressed Theo. Such is the competitive [but friendly] nature of the game in Adelaide, South Australia.
Well done CLAUDIE TROMP.

League 2009
Well, we have not forgotten that we still do not have a 2009 Club Champion. But behind the scenes matches have been played and we now have a result for the last 6 months of 2009, the ‘second half’ and the score sheets are attached. The final was played between CHRIS BENHAM and ANGELO ALI. The final is played for the best of 3 9 pint matches. In the 1st match, Angelo sprinted away to be 5-0 up, a significant advantage when playing to 9 points. Chris then caught up, one point at a time to even the score and then continued past to win 9-5. In the 2nd match, it was Chris that sprinted ahead to 6-2 with Angelo reaching 6-5 and then winning a massive 4 point game to win the match 9-6. One match all. The 3rd match started slow for Angelo with Chris moving ahead 4-1, then 7-2 and then Angelo crept up 7-3, 7-4, 7-6. Chris took it to 8-6 to 9, and the Crawford game kicked in. One big chance for Chris but it was not to be. Angelo won the Crawford game and then from 8-7 won 2 points in the last game to take the match and the 3 match series 2-1.
Well, that is not the end of it for these two because; guess who won the 2009 1st half league. That’s right, Chris Benham. So these two will fight it out again for the 2009 club championship. If Chris had won, he would have been club champion but he has another series of games to play and win. And as we have seen [and as anyone who has played Angelo can attest] Angelo never gives up and is a formidable player indeed. But so is Chris who is on a massive winning streak. More in due course.
20 May 10
- MINI BACKGAMMON TOURNAMENT RESULTS
On the 18th May, we organised two such one game events. Whilst we have been calling them ‘one point matches’, they are really about getting gammons or backgammons to win. Winning just one point [given the cube is out of play] is not enough to win the tournament.
In the first 8 player tournament, JOHN McLEAN [7 points] emerged as the winner with a tie for second place between JOHN O’GRADY and CHRIS CLIFFORD [6 ½ points each]. But because Chris had beaten John when they played, CHRIS CLIFFORD claimed second place [and the associated prize money]. Interesting to note both 1st and 2nd place players each won a gammon. Well done JOHN and CHRIS.
In the second 5 player tournament, CHRIS BENHAM [5 points] emerged as the winner with again a tie for second place between ANGELO ALI and EMMANUEL LAVRENTIADIS [3 points each]. But because Emmanuel had beaten Angelo when they played, EMMANUEL LAVRENTIADIS claimed second place [and the associated prize money]. Interesting to note only Chris won a gammon. Well done CHRIS and EMMANUEL.
BACKGAMMON BOARD TOURNAMENT
On the 25th May, we will offer a $5 entry, 8 person, knockout tournament, with the prize of one of the club’s surplus backgammon boards. Players can enter as many times as they wish provided they have played and been knocked out and places are still available. A good value tournament for a really good board [red felt]. See Nick on the night.
12 May 10 - MAY 2010 KNOCK OUT Well, the score sheet for the May knockout mysteriously was not attached last newsletter so here it is now along with the pre promised happy snap of Emmanuel [winner to the right] and John [finalist to the left] with their medal trophies.
NEW MEMBER Welcome to new member and new player KATHRYN HARVEY – we are sure you will find the game both exciting and challenging.

06 May 10 - MAY KNOCKOUT RESULTS
EMMANUEL LAVRENTIADIS defeated JOHN O’GRADY : 7-5 to win the May knockout tournament. As the attached score sheet shows, this was a close fought, even match with Emmanuel coming out on top. Well done EMMANUEL. We will have a happy snap of his happy smiling face soon.
BACKGAMMON IN MELBOURNE
melBG has a new trial home for a few weeks - the London Tavern in South Caulfield, and a new day - Thursdays 7.30-11pm - starting Thursday May 6th. See www.melbg.net for more details.
22 Apr 10 - APRIL ROUND ROBIN TOURNAMENT(S)
On Tuesday 20th, we organised 2 rounds of 8 – these are round robin 1 point matches.
And they are exciting and different – players go for the gammons and backgammons - and they come.
The winner of the 1st draw was NICK BEGAKIS with 8.5 points and 2nd was CEDRIC VASSEUR with 6 points. Interesting to note that Nick won 3 gammons and Cedric 2.
Winner of the 2nd draw was JOHN McLEAN with 8.5 points and 2nd was CLAUDIE TROMP with 7 points. Interesting to note that John won a backgammon, Claudie won a gammon as did Shane McNally and Angelo Ali won a gammon and a backgammon.
BACKGAMMON DOWN THE SOUTH COAST Backgammon at Victor Harbor – at Whalers Inn – contact Tom at accounts@whalersinnresort.com.au
IT HAPPENS - JOHN O’GRADY must have thought he was there leading 10-2 but Jack Clark, not one to give up, fought and won 11-10. The moral of the story maybe is that if your opponent can win 10 points straight then so can you. Scoresheet here.
HAPPY SNAPS - Here we have Peter Geelen and Alan Perry celebrating their medals from their efforts at the SA OPEN [again as perhaps the photo in the last newsletter may not have opened – here’s trying again].

MINI TOURNAMENT ON AGAIN TUESDAY 20 APRIL
Yes, these one point match knockouts are popular and continue on a monthly basis.
07 Apr 10 - 2010 April Knock Out Tournament Results:
CEDRIC VASSEUR defeated JOHN McLEAN 7-3 on Tuesday night, 6th April.
Well done Cedric.
We have a happy snap of Cedric [L] being congratulated by John.
17 Mar 10 - MARCH 2010 MINI TOURNAMENT RESULTS
Dear Backgammon Friend,
We were able to fill 2 x 8 draws last night and again the competition was fierce.
Good to see, in the first draw, CHRIS CLIFFORD win his first tournament with ANGELO ALI as runner up.
And perennial JOHN McLEAN was victorious with JOHN O’GRADY as runner up.
And the 2010 league season marches on with some strong performances – the top 5 are;
| 1. |
CHRIS BENHAM |
73.9 |
| 2. |
ANGELO ALI |
63.2 |
| 3. |
JACK CLARK |
61.9 |

03 Mar 10 - March Knockout Tournament Results
JOHN O'GRADY defeated CHRIS BENHAM [yes you read right - John won] 7-0.
Well done John and well done Chris for reaching another final.
NEW MEMBER - We welcome Renee Lambert - hope your membership brings you excitement and pleasure.
OLD MEMBER - We welcome back Rob Brito - back from Asia, hopefully for some time. Good to see his happy smiling face last night.
MINI TOURNAMENT - Yes, another one of these 1 point screamers is to be held TUESDAY 16th March.
CLUB BOARDS - As disclosed in our accounts, the club has 4 vinyl backgammon boards that are in good condition outside [3 in such state anyway - one is missing latches] and all are perfect inside. They are surplus to requirements and will be "tournamented off" to return funds to the club. So in the next few months, as time permits, we will be organising 4 small $5 tournament with first prize being one of these boards. Keep an eye out all those of you who come Tuesday nights without boards.
16 Feb 10 - FEBRUARY MINI TOURNAMENT
From a field of 8, Nick Begakis scored 8 points just pipping John O'Grady to win - John scored 7 points. These round robin matches are exciting given the object is to win a gammon or backgammon as the cube is out of play. It is not quite 10 all to 11 where a win is enough and the risk of going better is not worthwhile.
PHOTOS
We have photos of Chris Benham receiving his trophies for winning the SA OPEN. The rewards included dinner for 2 at the Hilton Brasserie Restaurant, Seriously South Australian. We have a photo of John McLean receiving his semi final medal, a photo of the various trophies and a photo of Nick Begakis and John O'Grady congratulating each other on their relative success in the FEBRUARY MINI TOURNAMENT.

15 Feb 10 - AGM - 2010.
The Annual General Meeting of our Association was held on Tuesday 9th February at 9:00pm and the order of business was the acceptance of the audited financial statements and the election of the committee for 2010. Treasurer John O'Grady circulated copies of the audited accounts and explained the various entries in both the trading statement and the balance sheet. The club made a small surplus in 2009 and our members net assets grew by that amount. The Audited accounts were accepted unanimously by those members present. Next item of business was the election of officers and President Nick Begakis advised that valid nominations had been received for the following positions. President : Nick Begakis - Treasurer : John O'Grady - General Committee Members : Siegfried Pohlenz, Angelo Ali, Vassilios Toubakaris and Chris Benham. There being no further nominations, the positions were declared filled as nominated. And then at 9:30pm, a hot supper arrived - which only distracted us from our games slightly but enabled us to socialise a bit more.
7 Feb 10 - SA OPEN
Well - it is CHRIS BENHAM again - Chris defeated TERRY EFTHIMIOU 15-4 : as seen from the score sheet attached that Terry only won 2 games : and the Consolation Tournament was won by Peter Geelen from Soto Phillis... Commentary and photos here.
AGM: Our AGM is this Tuesday at 9:00pm - with supper at 9:15pm.
Mini tournament: Our next mini tournament is on Tuesday 16 th February. Last time we had 2 x 8 draws.
