CHRIS BENHAM WINS CONSOLATION TOURNAMENT
Exactly 16 players fronted on Sunday 28th June to contest this double elimination event. Good to see Terry Efthimiou, Peter Geelen, Alan Perry and Charles Embling back in competition. Double elimination means that after 2 losses, players are out. However, for those going that way, a 32 spot unlimited entry consolation tournament was available and boy, did they use the unlimited part. But more of that later.
John McLean won through without loss as did Soto Phillis but John triumphed, relegating Soto to play Shane McNally who had been knocked out in the main flight by ... you guessed it, Soto. So Soto proceeded to knock out Shane which then gave him another crack at John McLean. But it was not to be as the attached score sheet shows with John emphatically defeating Soto 11 - 4.
And back at the 32 spot unlimited entry consolation tournament, the poor souls fighting their way though in treacherous 5 point matches kept entering again and again. Nick Begakis entered 8 times closely followed by Siegfried Pohlenz, 7 times, Nick Papadopoulos and Jack Clark, 5 times. Chris Benham did not fare well in the main flight but entered once in the consolation and won through to the final. As did Angelo Ali who also entered just the once and made it through to the consolation final. The result was also emphatic with Chris defeating Angelo 5-1. Well done Chris, commiserations Angelo.
