SA OPEN BACKGAMMON
TOURNAMENT 2003
On
Sunday 6th April we had some 18 entrant so 14 buy-backs
were available. To ensure the buy-backs did not hold up
the main draw, the matches were to 5 points instead of 9.
This meant potentially “sudden death” but was
necessary to keep the tournament moving.
Of
note are; Angelo Ali bought in 3 times, Nick Begakis AM
bought in twice as did Kostis Tsoukaris and Terry Conway.
The final 8 were John O’Grady, Rob Brito, John McLean,
Peter Geelen, Chris Benham, Terry Conway [b], Kostis Tsoukaris
[b] and Angelo Ali [b]. [b] signifies player came through
the buy back.. John O’G knocked out Rob, John McL—Peter,
Chris—Terry and Angelo—Kostis.
The
final 4 played off with John McLean meeting Chris Benham
in the final. Interestingly enough, these two are regularly
head to head Tuesday nights. And so it was that the final
was rescheduled at the players request for the Tuesday night.
As
the score sheet shows, John was leading significantly at
12-9 but was destined not to win another point with Chris
winning the next 4 games and 6 points to defeat John. Chris
took home $1,000 and a great trophy for his efforts.
