2005 LEAGUE CHAMPION
Finally, we have a result. The top 10 in the second half of the 2005 league were;
1. JOHN McLEAN
2. NICK BEGAKIS AM
3. JOHN O’GRADY
4. SEIGFRIED POHLENZ
5. ANGELO ALI [2005 1st Half League winner].
6. EMMANUEL LAVRENTIADIS
7. THEO GEORGIOU
8. NICK PAPADOPOULOS
9. CLAUDIE TROMP
10. MARK GRINDLAY
The match to decide who played ANGELO ALI was played between JOHN McLEAN (who knocked out CLAUDIE TROMP) and JOHN O”GRADY (who knocked out NICK BEGAKIS AM) and we always knew a John was going to win! Well JOHN McLEAN it is! And the Grand Final between Angelo and John yielded some really interesting play. Each player has a different style and this showed in their matches. Angelo is perhaps a bit more aggressive while John perhaps a bit more conservative. Both are dangerous! The outcome was to be decided by the best of 3 games to 9 points. Game 1 saw Angelo leap from 2/0, 6/0, 8/0 and one could be forgiven for thinking Angelo would win this 9 point game. Wrong! John won the Crawford Game so the score stood at 8/1. John then went on to win 8/3, 8/5, 8/7 and 8/9, no doubt demoralising Angelo in the process. However, if we can win 8 points straight, our opponent can also. Game 2 saw a reversal of game 1 with John streaking ahead 1/0, 3/0, 4/0, 5/0 at which point Angelo scored 5/2 and the 5/4. But that was as close as Angelo got. John moved ahead steadily, 6/4, 7/4, 8/4 and finally 9/4 for the Club Championship. Of course, Game 3 was unnecessary and therefore not played.
KNOCK OUT TOURNAMENTS
The March No1 Knock-out Tournament (7 points matches) was won by BILL KORALLIS from NICK PAPADOPOULOS; 8/2. The March No2 Knock-out Tournament (7 point matches) was won by EMMANUEL LAVRENTIADIS from ALEX ATHANS; 7/4. Remember, these are really popular and we usually get to fill two a night. Come early to get in. Alternately, you can book your spot with JOHN O’GRADY should you wish to avoid disappointment. However, if you book and are late, points start to be lost at 7:05pm. And remember to bring your own board to ensure you get to play.
