2002 LEAGUE
So
the top ten as at the end of December 2002 were;
| BILL TOUBAKARIS |
74.2 |
| ALEX ATHANS |
66.0 |
| SIEGFRIED POHLENZ |
59.4 |
| JOHN McLEAN |
59.0 |
| KOSTIS TSOUKARIS |
59.0 |
| PERICLES DEDES |
58.6 |
| BILL KORALLIS |
57.1 |
| THEO GEORGIOU |
52.1 |
| ANGELO ALI |
51.6 |
| PETER GEELEN |
48.6 |
They
played off for the best of three 9 point matches for a spot
in the grand final..
This mini-tournament of itself produced some exciting matches
and of particular interest was how BILL KORALLIS, winner
of the first half of the 2002 club championship would perform
given his No7 starting position. In the end Bill was knocked
out in the first round and ALEX ATHANS knocked out KOSTIS
TSOUKARIS for the right to play Bill in the Grand Final.

The
Grand Final was very exciting and contained the usual twists
and turns the game of backgammon can deliver—a cruel
game where defeat can be snatched from the jaws of victory.
And so it appeared for BILL KORALLIS, leading 8-2 and 8-3
to 9 in both matches only to lose. Our commiserations to Bill
and our congratulations to ALEX ATHANS, 2002 CLUB CHAMPION,
again—we have lost count of his victories and titles.
