VALE - MARK GRINDLAY

Mark passed away December 12th in Melbourne, Australia. The Association sent a sheath of flowers (one of two alongside the coffin) and placed the notice below in the Adelaide Advertiser’s Funeral Notices. Representing the Association at Mark’s Funeral, which was attended by an estimated over 100 mourners, were President Nick Begakis AM, Treasurer John O’Grady, Committee Member Seigfried Pohlenz and long time members Chris Benham and John McLean. Our deepest sympathy and thoughts go to Claudie Tromp and Mark’s extended family at this difficult time. Claudie has requested we use this newsletter to thank all Association members who have offered their sympathy and expressions of support during the period of Mark’s illness and since his death.

MONTHLY KNOCK OUT TOURNAMENT – JANUARY 2007

The January 2007 Knock-out Tournament was won by NICK PAPADOPOULOS from DON SCHULZ (7-2).

If you have one, advise Nick, John, Vassillios or Siegfried or send an e-mail  as below - you will then receive regular “stop press” bulletins.

30 YEAR CELEBRATION TOURNAMENT – “THE 30th”

The Association in 2007 is 30 years old [young!]. To celebrate, we are organising a financial member’s only, year long, round robin tournament. Members must nominate to participate in “The 30th” and entry is free. This tournament will be different in that matches will be played to 21 points [yes, that’s right – 21 points! As some Grand Finals had been in the dim dark past] and will run from Tuesday 13th February 2007 until Tuesday 16th October 2007. Other differences from the league are that only two matches will be played with the same opponent and the top 6 will fight it out [rather than the top 10] and the best of 3 matches, finals, will be to 11 points. So there are over 30 opportunities to play opponents in “The 30th” during the 2007 season. A handsome suitably engraved trophy and a Bellis Fruit Bars Gift Basket will be awarded to the winner.

2007 MAJOR TOURNAMENT DATES

We have 3 major stand alone events in 2007, all held on a Sunday and scheduled as follows;

1.  SA OPEN - 25th February

2.  ANGIE HAMBOUR Double Elimination – 8th July

3.  SPRING TOURNAMENT – Triple Elimination – 4th November

Note them in your diaries now!

SUBSCRIPTIONS FOR 2007 NOW DUE – ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – 27/2/07

As we normally do, if you were a financial member in 2006, your financial membership is extended to, but does not includes, the date of the SA OPEN. The SA OPEN this year is the 25th February. If you are un-financial after this time [actually we will give grace until Wednesday 14th March 2007], your league results will be “wiped” and you will not be able to vote at the forthcoming AGM [Tuesday 27th February 2007] nor receive member’s rate and the consequent discount for other tournaments. But more importantly, other members who are financial will not wish to play you in the league as their wins will go unrecorded. So if you want to play on Tuesday nights, seek out Treasurer JOHN O’GRADY and pay your $10 [yes, only $10 per year] membership.

ACTION ON TUESDAY NIGHTS

Theo Georgiou watches nervously as Angelo Ali (red shirt) moves black clockwise. Theo has one checker on the bar and is facing a 4 point board, on which to enter, with three checkers already back. Nick Lavrentiadis (background) is offering his usual helpful support and commentary.
