June 2006

ANGIE HAMBOUR MEMORIAL DOUBLE ELIMINATION
BACKGAMMON TOURNAMENT

This event is scheduled for 16th July 2006 at the ADELAIDE HILTON INTERNATIONAL. A free, unlimited entry Consolation Tournament for those knocked out will be available all day. See your committee for entry forms or download here. Remember the early bird discount lapses 11th July 2006.

KNOCK OUT TOURNAMENTS

The April Knock-out Tournament No1 was won by ALEX ATHANS from CLAUDIE TROMP (7-3). The April Knock-out Tournament No2 was won by DON SCHULZ from EMIL ANDRAWOS (7-1).

The May Knock-out Tournament No1 was won by NICK PAPADOPOULOS from JOHN McLEAN (7-1). The May Knock-out Tournament No2 was won by DON SCHULZ from ALEX ATHANS (7-0).

The June Knock-out Tournament No1 was won by JOHN McLEAN from ALEX ATHANS (7-1). The June Knock-out Tournament No2 was won by JOHN O’GRADY from BILL TOUBAKARIS (7-2).

Interesting to see the pretty well emphatic way the finals in each tournament were won. Remember, these are really popular and we usually get to fill two a night. Come early to get in. Alternately, you can book your spot with JOHN O’GRADY should you wish to avoid disappointment. However, if you book and are late, points start to be lost at 7:05pm. Remember, bring your own board to ensure you get to play.

BACKGAMMON BOARDS

Members are advised to visit DORAN’s for some exotic and not so exotic offerings.

NEW MEMBERS

Welcome to ROB PARKINSON – whose league score does not reflect his passion and ability – yet.

COME-BACK FROM BEHIND
[yes it happens!]

Talk about “hard luck” – bet MARK GRINDLAY was thinking he had this in the bag, but if you can win 10 points straight, then so can your opponent. If this was ever an exercise in never giving up, then this is a great example. And as anyone who has played SIEGFRIED POHLENZ knows, he never gives up.

3 SIDES OF THE COIN

This is an exhibition at the MIGRATION MUSEUM on KINTORE AVENUE in the city and includes a quote by Club President NICHOLAS BEGAKIS AM on backgammon. Exhibiting now & worth a visit.

LEAGUE

The first half of the 2006 League finishes JUNE 27th and the second half begins JULY 4th. One change we are implementing in the second half League is that all players can play everyone else – 4 times, rather than the current 3. We have asked multi-talented backgammon player and programming “guru”, TERRY EFTHIMIOU, [who produced the club’s league sheet many years ago] to help us with a new layout with background software. So from July 4th, it’s 4 x now!!

EAST COAST MOVERS AND SHAKERS

Hamish, Neil and Jake are organising this again at Byron Bay for September 30 / October 1st. More details from bbblot@hotmail.com
