2005 SA OPEN
On Sunday 20th February, 2005, we were able to field a 16 place tournament at the HILTON ADELAIDE in Victoria Square. The last two spots in the first round of 16 were given over to buy backs and 4 players contested these 2 spots. These players were, TERRY EFTHIMIOU who was knocked out in the first round by ANGELO ALI, JOHN McLEAN who was also knocked out in the first round, by defending 2004 Champion, THEO GEORGIOU, PETER GEELEN, also a first round loser, by CHRIS BENHAM and finally, NICK PAPADOPOULOS, knocked out in round 1 by CLAUDIE TROMP. CHRIS BENHAM went straight through to the finals disposing of ANGELO ALI, and CLAUDIE TROMP in the top half of the draw. The bottom half however was a different story. TERRY EFTHIMIOU made the finals the hard way, from one match back from round 1 and playing these early rounds to a sudden death 5 points. On his way to the finals, TERRY EFTHIMIOU knocked out NICK PAPADOPOULOS, SEIGFRIED POHLENZ and defending 2004 Champion, THEO GEORGIOU. Score sheet ———>.
Chris had a mini break to 8-2, then Terry countered to level at 8-8 and then the wheels fell off for Chris [not winning another point] with Terry winning 4 points, then 2 points and then one point to secure victory 15-8. Well done TERRY EFTHIMIOU— 2005 SA OPEN CHAMPION. It is interesting to note that CHRIS BENHAM has won the SA OPEN 4 times, the last being 2003 and TERRY EFTHIMIOU has now won 5 times, the last time being 1996. Our thanks go the HILTON ADELAIDE for their assistance and dinner for two prize to the Brasserie, again.
CONSOLATION TOURNAMENT
As part of the SA OPEN day, those not “live” in the SA OPEN were able to participate in another 16 player tournament to a killer 5 points. Of note, President, NICK BEGAKIS and Treasurer JOHN O’GRADY entered 3 times each! Congratulations to DON SCHULZ who knocked out JOHN McLEAN in the final. Score sheet to the right.———>
NEW MEMBERS
Good to see SALLYANNE BOND back again. She says she is a bit rusty, but watch out. And ANDREW KADIS has joined. Andrew is the refined, distinguished looking gentleman. EMMANUEL LAVRENTIADIS and NICHOLAS LAVRENTIADIS have also joined, introduced by longstanding member, NICK PAPADOPOULOS. Welcome.
KNOCK TOURNAMENT— MARCH 2004
The MARCH KNOCKOUT TOURNAMENT was only half an event. Only 4 players arrived on time so Claudie Tromp played John McLean with John in the final and Bill Korallis played Chris Benham with Chris in the final. The final was won by CHRIS BENHAM. The next monthly tournament is to be held on TUESDAY—APRIL 5th.
