The 2005 East Coast 'Movers & Shakers' Backgammon Tournament

by Jake Rosenthal, Hamish Whetstone and Neil Young

Players came from The Gold Coast, Newcastle, Sydney, Adelaide and even drove up from Melbourne, to be at the first East Coast ‘Movers & Shakers’ Backgammon Tournament – held last weekend at the fabulous Byron Bay Beach Resort. The top-five finishers included locals Michael Maxwell, Barry Ross, Ephraim Sella and Darrell McDowall, alongside Paul Murphy from Thornton who was close to taking home prize money of over $1,200. After two days of backgammon between over 30 players, the final was eventually won by Darrell McDowall of Brunswick Heads over Ephraim Sella of Burringbar. Other winners included Cate Gibson as highest placed female and Steve Roberts, who took out the Calcutta Auction of $726 by backing the winner for $7! ‘Thunder’ and Steve Clarry took out the consolation round prizes to local runners-up Malcolm Hand and Hamish Whetstone.
There was lots of praise for the event’s location, venue, and format, especially the way the tournament was administered on the day by volunteers Sandy and Perri. The organizers, Jake Rosenthal, Hamish Whetstone and Neil Young plan to hold a bigger and better event next year. If anyone would like more details of the results, statistics, players final finishing positions or photos (we have over 80!) please let us know. We welcome comments.
