Walker Runs Away with Trophy
Tony Walker from Newcastle was the winner of The 2007 East Coast ‘Movers & Shakers’ Backgammon Tournament which was was held at the Bangalow Bowling Club on 10-11 November. Tony was the only person to beat Steve Roberts over the two-day event, and he beat him twice, once in the preliminary rounds and once in the final to take the trophy home to Newcastle.
Tony became the second player from Newcastle to win the East Coast Movers & Shakers Backgammon Tournament. After a Saturday of eight games, sixteen players progressed to the knock-out stages on Sunday and two Tony Walker (Newcastle) and Steve Roberts (Gold Coast) contested the final on Sunday evening. Tony won over $1,000 while local Darryl McDowall collected $850 for backing Tony in the Calcutta Auction for $22! Malcolm Hand from Byron Bay came third and the other highest local finisher was Hamish Whetstone who was equal fourth with David Reitzin from Sydney.
The Tournament is increasing in number of players each year and this year, at a new venue, players were very positive in their feedback both on the facilities, organisation and quality of the competition – If any players want a further breakdown of their position please contact bbblot@hotmail.com.
