Walker just avoids Rogering
Tony Walker from Newcastle beats Roger Micallef from Melbourne to win The 2008 East Coast ‘Movers & Shakers’ Backgammon Tournament for the second year in a row! Played out last Saturday and Sunday 18th/19th October at the Bangalow Bowling and Sports Club, the final was watched by many of the other participating players and went right to the wire. Micallef kicked off with some great early play and had Walker really sweating for most of the match, but in the end it was Walkers steady play that won the day. Players from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane as well as local players from Nimbin, Mullumbimby,Ocean Shores and Byron Bay participated in the tournament. Also present and playing was Jay Deva the current Australian Open Champion.
After a Saturday of six 7pt matches, sixteen players progressed to the knock-out stages on Sunday. By winning Tony took home nearly $2,000 while Barry Ross from Mullumbimby was the highest finishing local player who came in fourth. Tony Pontin, another local, won both the Consolation Round and the State of Origin competitions.
The Tournament is increasing in number of players each year and once again players were very positive in their feedback both on the facilities, organisation and quality of the competition – If any players want a further breakdown of their position please contact bbblot@hotmail.com.
