Australian FIBS Tournament rules

ACKNOWLEDGMENT

These tournament rules have been developed by David Escoffery (david@escoffery.com) and are used with his kind permission. They have been modified for Australia by Simon Woodhead (simon@uniq.com.au); any questions should be sent to Simon, not David.

FORMAT

The competition is a single elimination knockout with fields of 8 paying $25 entry fee. Tournaments are run each month, with additional tournaments scheduled on demand. All matches are to 7 points. Prizemoney is 8 X $25 entries = $200. First prize - $140 Second Prize - $60.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Any valid Australian FIBS players other than computers (e.g. jellyfish, snowie, gnubg) that have a minimum of 50 experience points can register to play in the Tournament; however, the Director reserves the right to refuse entry to any player, as well as reserving the right to waive the 50-point experience minimum. Entrants must be resident in Australia to qualify but do not need to be Australian Citizens.

ENTRY FEES

All entry fees shall be payable in Australian Dollars to:

Simon Woodhead
PO Box 70
Paddington
NSW 2021

Entry fees for this competition are A$50. Cheques or Paypal are the preferable mode of payment. Send cash at your own risk. Credit card entries are not possible at this time. Personal cheques will be accepted subject to clearance, which can take up to 5 working days. You may also transfer funds directly to my bank account; ask for details. Confirmation will be sent via electronic mail when entry fees are received.

REGISTRATION

To register, copy and complete the entry form at the bottom of this page and include with your entry fee. In order to play in the Tournament, all players must have a valid internet address where they can send and receive electronic mail, and be capable of using their email system. Please make sure to include your timezone on your entry form otherwise AEST will be assumed.

Players will be notified of the draw via email and results will be posted on the Sydney Backgammon web site.

PRIZE DISTRIBUTION

100 percent of all the collected entry fees will be returned to the winners of the tournaments.

MATCH LENGTHS

All match lengths will be 7 points.

START

The tournament will start when sufficient paid up entries are received.

VENUE

All matches are to be played on FIBS, the First Internet Backgammon Server.

TIME

One week is the projected time to complete one round, but nobody will be forfeited for failing to do that. Please do not wait to be contacted by your opponent; the Tournament Director may declare a forfeit if one player has not contacted either their opponent or the Tournament Director by email in what will be interpreted as an inordinate amount of time. The decisions of the Tournament Director will be final.

SLOW PLAY

Players are expected to make their best efforts to complete matches in a reasonably timely manner. Any player who believes their opponent is not making such an effort, has the right to complain to the Tournament Director.

TOGGLE PIP

Both players must have Toggle Pip set to on.

OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE

Players are prohibited from using or obtaining any assistance from computers, books, equity tables, or individuals (including kibitzers) during the course of a match. Any violation will be viewed as cause for disqualification from the tournament.

ANOMALIES

Players are encouraged to save their matches while in progress (setting toggle move "on" and printing out the moves after the completion of each game is one option). If a saved match gets deleted somehow from FIBS, players will need to start a new match and resign the number of games necessary to bring the match score back in sync. If an incomplete game gets lost because of a similar problem with the server, that game will be restarted from the start regardless of the position at the time of the crash. There are also rare occasions where a single roll of the dice which has already been displayed (and possibly played) may be lost due to a system error. Here again, it will be viewed as if the roll never happened, and the dice must be rerolled after resumption of the game. In extreme cases where such a lost roll might have had a significant effect on the outcome of the match, the players may ask the Director for a ruling.

RESIGNING

Errors cannot be made in resignations. If a player elects to Resign a position, once the opponent Accepts the resignation, the score stands.

KIBITZERS

There shall be no kibitzing during matches. Others are encouraged to watch any tournament matches in progress, but shall restrict all comments during play to the Whisper command. Any player has the right, of course, to "blind" any kibitzer from watching their match; however, this is not encouraged without good reason.

DIRECTOR

The Director for these tournaments is Simon Woodhead (simon@uniq.com.au).

DISPUTES

In the event of a dispute, the decision of the Director will be final.

DROPPING OUT OF TOURNAMENT

If a player drops out after starting their 1st round match, or is disqualified by the Tournament Director, their entry fee will not be refunded.

REPORTING RESULTS

All match results should be reported to the Tournament Director via email. At regular intervals, revised ladders will be mailed to all tournament players and posted to the Sydney Backgammon web site. An erroneous result may still be corrected, but not after either of the players has begun a succeeding match.
