Winners on the day. Playing for Gold, Ian was victorious over Steve.
Hi Gang of Backgammoners,
STEVE CAPITULATES TO IAN
CONGRATULATIONS to Ian Dunstan over Steve Clarry in the main tournament. Both the players claim to have had tough matches leading to the final which accounts for their early departure after the finals. They did, however, manage to wend their way through the land mines placed in their path to the final. Ian triumphed over Harry Parker in the first semi while Steve outlasted Ruben Soloman in the other semi-final. Gold to Ian, silver to Steve, and bronze to Robbie, who out rolled Harry.
We did also hold two minor tournaments, an "almost" consolation tournament and a small beginner's. Mimi split the consolation with Michael Sampieri from the Sunshine Coast. I hope Mimi Bellini has some consolation @ Georges with her vouchers while Michael drowns his sorrows in his lucky door prize, a magnum of excellent red wine donated by George. GLUG, GLUG, GLUG.
Although, there were seasoned players in the minor tourney, a Johnny come lately called Andrew Hill-male blitzed the field to win over Dora ( Mano's wife or is Mano, Dora's husband ). The new faces of b/g had never played in a tournament or used the cube much, but, they do know the fundamentals of the game. Let us, experienced players give them a few hints and muddy their minds, shall we. Mano, next time u play Dora @ home, use the cube, and double up on your washing up duties, when u lose. It was great to see u both there and bring more friends. Maybe we can play Greek style b/g as well.
The Second tournament @ Georges went swimmingly for all those who did attend. There were a few new faces and more old ones. I was really pleased to see people who do not attend the regular club nights @ Georges. I was hoping for Eva & Ivor Bitel to turn up, but, Ivor was not feeling too well on Sunday. For those, who remember the good old days, they were the stalwarts of b/g then and icons now. Sorry about the cliché.
Last, but, not least, I would like to thank George for the venue and the specials, as well as the attention & service provided by staff thru the day and night. It was an early finish--12 pm-- unlike the last one, @ 1 am. I would also like to thank the visitors who did not play but, provided the extra ambience. Well done, George.
Thank you to all the regulars and club members without whom b/g would not exist except for the occasional chouettes. The b/g club does need some new blood as well as the ex-players to make a return. Mimi is looking around for new premises and, if, anyone who receives this has any ideas please feel free to contact me or Mim. New players, venue and ambience would enhance the game.
Feedback about any aspect of the tournament or backgammon will be much appreciated.
Till the next time, maybe in April !!!!!!!
