| The
Greek Festival of Sydney - Backgammon Tournament - New Kids on the
Block
by Mark Driver
In Greece, backgammon has
long enjoyed the reputation of a National Game. On 21 March 2004,
as part of a diverse and entertaining celebration of Greek and Australian
culture, a free-to-enter backgammon tournament was sponsored and
organized by members of the Mill Hill Backgammon Club. The 32- player
tournament featuring single-point matches managed to capture the
participation and imagination of a wide selection of players including
locals and international visitors. The youngest and arguably the
keenest competitors were hardly tall enough to see over the board,
while their older compatriots enjoyed the lively social interaction
afforded by the rows of game-boards.
After four hours of competitive play,
two young brothers, Jamie and Michael Para had emerged from the
field to take their places at the final table. Surrounded by family
members, and supported by mentors, personal trainers and a host
of kibitzers who had closely followed their progress during throughout
the day, the brothers kept the crowd entertained with spirited play.
After a tense and closely contested middle game Jamie successfully
managed to dismantle his outfield blockade and jump over his brother's
high anchor to take the game and the trophy.
Thanks to all those who participated
and assisted in the running of the event. And we look forward to
the Para brothers' future participation at the Mill Hill club, in
some 7 or so years when they will legally be old enough to enter
the licensed premises...
