Newcastle
Open 2002
by organiser Rob Disney
On September 1, 2002,
the Newcastle Open was held at the Kotara Bowling Club using a Swiss
Tournament format.
32 players lined up with locals being joined by players from as
far afield as Melbourne (Larry Mastro), Canberra (David Berry) and
Queensland (Leo Morris) as well as the usual suspects from Sydney
aboard the "Mill Hill Express".
Under the true Swiss format for 7 rounds the first clear leader
was Robert Disney as the only player to win 5/5. A loss in the 6th
however opened the field up again with Newcastle debutante Paul
Barnett (victor over RD)leading after the 6th.
Alas, the leader fell again and after 7 rounds going into the King
of the Hill last round, Ian Dunstan and Robert Disney were the only
two players on 6 wins. This match would therefore decide the winner
as only one could end up on 7 wins. Half a dozen other players were
in line for place postions.
Final victory ($650) to Ian Dunstan winning the last game 5-2 to
finish with 7 wins with a 20 point margin from Paul Barnett ($200)
who battled back in the last to finish with 6 wins +16 and Peter
Brown ($95) taking 3rd on 6 wins +10. Michael Mills and Robert Disney
tied for 4th with 6 wins +5.
The Bonus pool which pays on results between rounds 1-4, 4-7 and
on the final result resulted in $100 wins to Peter Brown who won
his first 4 / +11 and Michael Mills, who after a poor start, was
the only player to win rounds 4 thru 7.
Ian Dunstan picked up the overall portion (an extra $300) as the
top player from the Bonus pool.
Thanks go to the Kotara Bowling Club for the venue, Dave Bower for
use of his laptop to run the draw and the Newcastle club members
for their assistance throughout the day.
All in all a good day - Rob Disney
Indeed it was -
thanks to Rob for his usual efficient and smooth organisation!
