Out of a possible 231 points on offer, only 19 points were dropped
overall - an average margin of only two points per match... testament
to the close competition.
Tom Chrysostomou was the 2002-2003 season ladder leader, so congrats

2003 Sydney Backgammon Championships announcement
Details are still being
finalised, but currently there is over $1000 added cash! The tournament
will be played at a new venue - The Old Fitzroy Hotel in Woolloomooloo
on Sunday December 7th. To pre-register, contact Tournament Director

The highly competitive
Winter Season witnessed the return of girl power to the Mill Hill
with former championship winner Gabby Nagata securing an impressive
ten-point lead at the top of the field. Well done Gabby; Go Girl!
Congratulations to Ryan Jones who emerged victorious over runner-up
Ian Dunstan in the end of season value-added tournament.The club has
enjoyed a significant increase in the participation of regular players
this year and particularly in the Winter Season. As a result the
$50 tournament has been extended to meet increased demand and is
now a regular fixture with a 16-player field with a reduced match
length of seven points. The popular $20 tournament continues as
usual with a 16-player field.The club bade
farewell (again) to regular John Mc Aleenan who after gaining his
pilots license decided to fly off back to Ireland. Good luck John
and we hope to enjoy your company again in the future. This season's
visiting players included former World Amateur Backgammon champion Russel
Sands and Greg Kurrell from the USA.

The Autumn
season witnessed fierce competition in the championship battle as
Jay Deva narrowly edged out Ryan Jones (by a single point) proving
once again he is the main man to beat in 2003. Congratulations to
Jay in securing his second championship trophy of the year! Congratulations
also go out to club veteran David Reitzin following his victory
in the value-added tournament and to runner-up and bonus pool winner
Wally Bartelme.The close
of the Autumn season marks the halfway-point in the battle for the
title of player of the year with Jay Deva enjoying a slim lead closely
followed by Wally Bartelme and Ian Dunstan.

in Sydney. Celebrated author of "Classic
Backgammon Revisited", Jeremy Bagai is visiting Sydney
for a few weeks and will be at the Mill Hill club on Tuesday April
1 (no this isn't an April Fools' joke!). He has some copies of his
book available and will be around for chouettes, lessons and maybe
even a master class.
