The 2009 Australian Masters and Queensland Backgammon Championships

The 2009 Australian Masters and Queensland Backgammon Championships were held on 8-9 August at the Commerce Club in Surfers Paradise on Queensland's Gold Coast. The Masters was well attended with 11 starters allowing 5 buybacks. Most notable of the late entries was David Saab, one of Australia's best known poker players, who seemed to enjoy getting back to his backgammon roots - especially as he made it to the final. Here's how it all panned out:

The Queensland Championship attendance was disappointing, however those that did turn up were willing to push the field up to 48 with buybacks. Sydney's Jay Deva won straight through to the minor Final where he lost to Steve Clarry. Jay would have another crack at Steve after defeating Kevin Jessup from Melbourne in the bottom third of the draw. The final Final saw Jay get off to a good start going 3-0 up in the 15 point match. But Steve was to continue his unstoppable form this year cruising to a 15-5 victory.
